Streaming the 1970s on my 360.

January 18th, 2010

I think that there are some songs that I like from the 1970s, but the title of this post is in reference to my Netflix ‘Watch Instantly’ queue. I have been loading my queue with Doctor Who, a series near and dear to my heart.

I have mainly been focusing on the Tom Baker years, which were filmed between 1974-1981. I am not entirely sure why some of them are available via streaming and some are not. I mean, it seems like everything that old should be available, but who knows, maybe someone’s estate is refusing to allow the content to be streamed due to royalties or something.

I have found that I need to have the TV on in the background when I am coding at home. There are times when I prefer to just have music, but it is just not the same. I have been trying to figure it out, I know that I am more productive without TV, but only from the standpoint of me not occasionally looking up at the screen. Without some sort of  background noise, I cannot focus.

When I am here at the office, I find that the listening to music is the perfect thing. But when I am at home, I prefer the TV. Not sure what it is, but unless Gina is home, then listening to music and coding just feels, I don’t know how else to put it but, lonely.

Anyway, the streaming quality of Netflix on the (xbox) 360 is superb.

In terms of this weekend though, it was not just coding and watching Doctor Who. I also had to clean-up the kitchen. As usual, I started falling back into my bachelor tendencies and not cleaning up all of the dishes I had used the day before. After that was done, it came time to mop up. I want to try and make sure that the house is clean for when Gina returns for Florida.

Let it be known that little dogs, have little bladders. And that while I do take them outside regularly (or leave the dog door open, provided the neighbor dog is inside), they occasionally make a mess. I had spot cleaned these messes, but it was time to mop the floor. I mopped, the kitchen, dining room and the living room. One of the benefits of having mostly tile, is that provided your back is strong, cleanup is easy.

I also did what Gina would normally start doing on a Sunday, dog laundry. Our dogs have an assortment of dog beds (many of which have been recently constructed by Gina herself), blankets, sweaters/shirts and what not. I am thinking that tomorrow night (because I will be too sore from Camp Gladiator tonight) the dogs will be getting bathes.

Another thing I did was cook dinner. Yup, amazing feat right?

I bring this particular cooking experience up, because I tried out a couple of new things.

1. I used our small Dutch Oven for the first time, I think Gina might have used it before, but I myself, had not. My in-laws have been giving us Le Creueset for Christmas the last couple of years.

2. I braised some beef short ribs. Never done that before. We buy them all the time to feed to the dogs, I had bought two packs of them and decided that I would cook and eat the second set myself.

3. I followed the recipe that came on the meat packaging. I think the recipe on the meat packaging is fairly universal and not just HEB. But they usually have some sort of recipe / cooking instructions on the sticker that tells you the price and weight. I followed the recipe and it turned out OK. In retrospect, I should have tasted the sauce/gravy that I made out of the broth before applying it to the meat, it could have used a little bit of salt.

I took the meat off the ribs, which was not a hard feat at all, they had cooked long enough that it fell off the bones. The carrots that I had put into the dutch oven with them turned out great. To be honest, it was kind of like pot-roast, but with short ribs.

I never remember how long to cook the Brussels sprouts for, so I had to call Gina. Afterward, when everything was plated up, I sent Gina a picture of what I had made. I opted not to put it up on Twitter, maybe I will post it up here later.

Unfortunately, the whole cleaning the kitchen, dog laundry, etc cost me a few more hours than I had wanted to, as I didn’t complete all of the coding that I had been planning to do this weekend. But I did manage to get a significant portion of what I am working on done. To which, there were a number of things that I was not familiar with how to make the framework do what I wanted to, but after a few hits with the sonic screwdriver, everything started to work just fine.

I hope to be able to do some more coding after I get done with Camp Gladiator. But, honestly I will likely end up eating dinner, taking a hot bath and passing out.

Back to the grind.

Resolutions for 2010

January 2nd, 2010

It is a cliché to make resolutions at the beginning of the year, but hey why not.

It goes without saying that I could stand to lose a few pounds. I have been meaning to actually make an effort to exercise. While watching TV, Gina and I both had he same reaction to the commercial for the EA Active ‘game’ for the Nintendo Wii. We both thought it was a really good idea.

I have had gym memberships before and well have just never used them. I had thought about getting the Wii Fit before and the EA Active looked to be quite interesting. We got a $100 gift card to Land’s End from work for x-mas. There wasn’t anything at Land’s End that we wanted. However, we were able to use that card at Sears.

Sears had both the Wii Fit (board and ‘game’) and the EA Active. I opted for us to get the Wii Fit board vs the EA Active. We might get the EA active later, but the Wii Fit board used up all but $2.59 cents of the gift card.

I did about 25 minutes on the Wii Fit tonight. I found some of the Yoga exercises quite challenging and some of them were not challenging but felt really good. I did some of the strength training routines as well, again some challenging, some just felt good.

The Wii Fit software is pretty good, intuitive and encouraging. I have to agree with some of the online reviews that I have read, where folks disagree with the ‘Wii Age’ that they get assigned. The system gave me a Wii Age of 49, which feels horrible, given that I am 31. This felt really horrible, when Gina got a Wii Age of 31, her real age.

Given that I don’t exercise on a regular basis, I am certain that I will manage to lose some weight by doing some Wii Fit exercises regularly. I also want to work in some REAL exercise, being going outdoors and running/jogging. But I will say this, I did the ‘Run’ that is within the Wii Fit and it was quite a workout to run in place for what I believe was two minutes. It was intelligent enough to know if you were ‘running’ too fast and makes you trip and fall (it detects and interprets the motion of the Wiimote to gauge the speed of your run) .

Gina and I both setup our profiles and set our goals. Hers are a bit more aggressive than mine, but the software allows you to change your goals up every two weeks.

I am going to try and get in at least 25-30 minutes of Wii Fit in a day/night. I would like to try and get in a run/jog in twice a week and use the office gym at least once a week.

I have talked about stuff like this in the past, but never really tried to plan it out. I hope to be able to keep this resolution and reach my goals.

I would like to make some other resolutions as well.

  1. Exercise Regularly
  2. Keep Baking Bread Regularly (including using my own starters not just active yeast)
  3. Salad For Lunch 3x Week (including weekends)
  4. Blog Regularly (not daily, but several times a week)
  5. Take a real vacation, i.e. not in Michigan or Tejas.
  6. Make dinner more often.

I think I have cooled down sufficiently from my ‘workout’ and am definitely ready for bed.

Where does the time go

August 24th, 2009

I was going to start this post with the usual sort of ‘I am sorry for not blogging more.’ type of apology. But in an interest of being different, I am just going to say that I have been hella busy.

At the beginning of the year I made the decision that I needed to be more social, get out of my comfort zone, etc. As part of those efforts I started ‘hanging out’ on Twitter, which led me to hearing about ProductCamp. I heard rumor about the 2009 Winter camp about 2 weeks after it had been held. So when I saw folks chatting about the upcoming Summer 2009 ProductCamp on Twitter, I decided to jump in and volunteer.

Right about this same time I happened to see something about about a company known as ‘Tech Ranch’ doing something in Cedar Park. I immediately took interest, given that i live in Cedar Park and Tech Ranch is a company that is in the business of fostering, growing and accelerating the entrepreneurial community. I re-tweeted some announcements about their upcoming town hall meeting. Due to my re-tweeting, I was invited to come on down to the Ranch (of Tech) and meet with the founders.

The Tech Ranch folks were looking for a ‘Wrangler’ or a ‘Mobilizer’ to help build and foster an entrepreneurial community in Cedar Park.  I volunteered to help them and the City of Cedar Park build the community.

ProductCamp was GREAT! Over 300 product development/marketing related professionals showed up to the UTC building down on August 15th. I showed up to the planning meeting back in June and had the intention of just volunteering to help with something minor, but instead I ended up volunteering to the be the Volunteer & Logistics Coordinator.

I recruited and organized all of the volunteers for the event. However, I cannot take all of the credit, I had some absolutely fantastic team leads that helped pull it all together. At several points during the process of trying to pull it all together, I might have thought that I never wanted to volunteer for anything again. In the end though, I am looking forward to the helping with the organization of the Winter 2010 ProductCamp.

I have been working on a few side projects, so my evenings have not been filled with the usual TV watching and video games, it has been filled with coding and having Hulu on in the background. I found a couple of great shows, Defying Gravity and Greek.

To be completely honest, there has been a little bit of video game playing. They released Civilization Revolution for the iPhone, which is a very good port of the game in comparison to the Nintendo DS version, which in turn was a fairly good port from the XBOX-360 edition.

I have still been baking bread, my last few loaves of Pepperoni-Cheddar bread were good, but I think I still need to find the perfect ratio of pepperoni and cheese. My last batch of Rye bread was GREAT. This evening I baked up an artisan loaf of mustard seed wheat bread. I also prepped a batch of pizza dough.

It is really late and I need to get to bed.

It came home

February 16th, 2009

My 360 has been home for a couple of days now.

When I originally shipped it off for repair, I did not think to list my shipping address as the office. Which is unusual, I normally have packages sent to the office, since more often than not they require a signature, which does not happen when I am not home, obviously.

Microsoft replaced my busted 360 with a completely different one. Gina asked me why they did this, I can only surmise that it is because it is easier for the “repair facility” to put all the busted ones in a crate to ship back to China for “repair” and just pick a “refurbed” one from the pile and ship back to me.

They gave me a nice letter stating that they apologize for causing me any inconvenience, which was nice of them.

Even nicer was the Xbox:LIVE Gold card they sent me, good for one extra month of service. Because a day after having my 360 home and getting my daily fix of Fallout3, my LIVE Gold membership expired.

So, I guess I want to say two things.

1. Microsoft you suck! I mean there was probably some executive out there that weighed the costs of repair vs the time and cost for delaying the launch. So they shipped a buggy product. Which, when you ship softwar can be forgiven, just a little bit more so. You know, because a software patch is not as much of a problem as sending in a physical unit.

2. Thank You for acknowledging that you suck. You guys have endoured the “slings and arrows” of many rabid users, competitors and pundits and in my opinion have provided what has to be deemed GREAT customer service. You extended the warranty on all 360 units by 2 additional years for the RRD issue, you have taken to replacing the units with refurbs, speeding up the return time, and most of all you give the consumer something for their troubles.

Those are all things that you did NOT have to do. Those are things that I believe help make up for the fact that you guys shipped buggy hardware.

So definitely keep up the good customer service, but possibly, please possibly try to not ship hardware with such a fatal design flaw in the future.

“Come back to me…”

February 8th, 2009

“Hear my voice
Where you are
Take a train
Steal a car
Hop a freight
Grab a star
Come back to me

Catch a plane
Catch a breeze
On your hands
On your knees
Swim or fly only please
Come back to me…”

(Cherry Poppin’ Daddies - Come Back to Me)

I got the email notice from Microsoft that my Xbox360 will soon be coming back to me. They have done, whatever it is that they do to fix it. I mean from what I have ready, they have to replace some chips (i.e. the ones that burned out) and I have seen that they put in some “heat pipes” as to try to ensure that the replaced chips don’t burn out again.

I was very surprised when I checked my repair order the other day and saw that my beloved 360 had been shipped to a repair facility in Mesquite, TX.

This means that Microsoft’s Xbox Division/Group has worked out a system to handle the logistical nightmare of repairing what could eventually be 10 million Xbox 360s. I am not saying that they have gotten it all worked out.

I did a quick search and found that many folks have been without their 360s for weeks and months. And the fact that the repair center is in Texas, appears to be a lucky coincidence for me. As, it would appear that folks from Alabama, Ohio and who knows where. It would appear the the Mesquite, TX repair facility might be the only one around. I remember reading about how UPS had a specialized center setup for DELL, to handle some basic returns (like bad batteries, etc), if I can find the article I will post a link.

I also found another guy who had a similar experience, back in November.

Below is his timeline:

Here is the timeline of the repair process, I will keep updating as it progresses:

Oct 29 – Three Red Lights
Nov 4 6 PM– Entered request for repair on http://support.xbox.com/
Nov 5 12 AM – Got tracking number for return box
Nov 7 3 PM – Return box arrived at house
Nov 10 10 AM – Box picked up by UPS
Nov 13 11 AM – Box delivered to Microsoft repair facility in Mesquite, TX
Nov 14 6 AM – Microsoft acknowledges receipt of my 360
Nov 15 11 AM – Microsoft says 360 is repaired
Nov 17 4 PM – Box leaves Microsoft to return to me
Nov 20 7 PM – I picked up package from UPS

Almost exactly 16 days for the turnaround, which isn’t great but isn’t too bad either.  Most of the time was waiting for shipping back and forth.

Here is my timeline thus far…

Jan 29 - 4AM - Red Ring of Death aka Three Red Lights

Jan 29 - 5AM - Registered 360 online and requested repair on http://support.xbox.com/

Jan 29 - 6AM - Received automated confirmation from Microsoft

Feb 3 - 2PM - UPS dropped off the box I requested be sent.

Feb 3 - 4PM - Dropped off box (containing 360) at the UPS store on 1431.

Feb 5 - 2PM - Received email stating repair facility has received 360.

Feb 7 - 6PM - Received email stating repairs have been completed and box will be shipped.

Feb ? -  ???   - I receive my repaired 360.

That means that from the day it broke until the day it was repaired, was 10 days. From the day that I actually shipped it off to them, it means it was only 4 days. From the day that they received it until it was repaired, that is only 2 days. I will likely receive my 360 back on Tuesday at the latest Wednesday.

So, one thing that I will say after reading several folks stories had much longer wait times do the fact that they lived so far away from the Mesquite, TX repair facility. This in part is likely do to the “UPS Ground” shipping, it takes a long time. Unless you live in TX, because UPS Ground within the state of Texas, is like OVERNIGHT service.

I am looking forward to playing Fallout 3 again. I have been playing Fallout 2 here and there, but it just isn’t the same. I really miss the FPS view of Fallout 3.

Well, Gina is asking me what we are doing for lunch so I better get going.

Le Cirque Rouge has come to the Benner home

January 29th, 2009

XBOX FAIL!

I have logged a fair amount of time on my Xbox360, but not enough to expect Le Cirque Rouge.

Le Cirque Rouge => Red Circle Of Death => Busted Xbox360.

1UP Article

At 4am this morning we successfully completed a maintenance window. I have been playing Fallout3 a fair amount lately, and figured I could get an hour of gaming in before I needed to go and pass out for a few hours, you know to unwind.

I hit the power button on my controller and didn’t hear the usual sounds that I would expect to hear from my beloved gaming console. So I looked over and saw something that frightened me, three red flashing lights.

The 360 is dead, long live the 360.

I purchased my 360 back in January of 2007, which means that I should be within the 3 year period for them to repair the red circle.

So, I know what I will be doing later today.

Yup, not playing Fallout3.

Ok, I am going to bed now.

Quick Update:

I managed to log into my account on xbox.com and request that they send me a box and a prepaid shipping label, so that I can ship my xbox off for “repair”. To be honest, I think I am most concerned that the “repair” might be like when you get your iPod “repaired”, being they just send you a new unit. Therefore, my various saved games will be gone. (and I haven’t read about other people’s experiences, yet.)

Also, I had to get the serial number off the back of my 360, at which point I got a whiff of that wonderful smell of burnt electronics.

Pirates of my silicon living room

December 7th, 2008

It has been said “It is better to be a pirate than join the navy.”

Notably, it was said during the movie “Pirates of Silicon Valley”, which Gina, John and I watched yesterday in the living room. Normally, this wouldn’t be remotely blog worthy.

This however was not a normal viewing. We watched it on YouTube.com, on the living room TV, via the S-Video cable on my laptop. The reason we had to watch it on YouTube, is because I apparently left the DVD disc in my old HP laptop, which is back at the office. (We had watched it a few weeks ago, late on a Friday afternoon at the office.)

But thanks to the miracles of modern technology, I was able to pipe the YouTube version out to the TV. The sound aspect was a slightly different story, I had to steal the sound system from my office computer. There were a few downsides to this setup.

The first downside, was that the 95 minute film was broken into about 10 parts, each being just a little bit less than 10 minutes each. This meant that after each part ended, soemone would have to click on the next segment, which was usually me.

The second downside, is that for some reason part #7 was missing, not sure why it was missing, the “video had been removed”. All the others were perfectly good.

The last downside was more of a minor, minor annoyance. Not sure that John or Gina noticed (or cared), but the dubbing looked to be a bit off. I am not sure if this was a combination of the s-video output or the videoes themselves. But the audio appeared to be about a half second ahead of the video.

The, next marvel of technology was that we all wanted to watch Hackers, a cheesy, yet classic techie movie. I love it because of the cameo appearances of Jolt Cola. Now, I still swear that we own the DVD of Hackers, but it could have been a VHS tape. Either way, we searched our DVD collection and could not for the life of us find it.

So we turned to the U-Verse’s video on-demand service. Low and behold, there it was for a mere $2.00, we could rent it. The movie started up almost instantly (not suffering from any of your usual “buffering lag” that you get when watching movies over the Internet.

I mean, the idea of a video on-demand isn’t anything new, cable companies have had the technology for quite some time. But overall the number of movies available have usually been limited and therefore only your current titles. The U-Verse video library has a wide variety of movies available, Hackers was made in 1995.

While, I am talking about this type of tech, I have to mention the recent addition of a marvelous feature to the XBOX-Live experience, Netflix Video On-Demand. Meaning that I can watch streaming Netflix videos through my XBOX-360. I have used the service to watch some silly TV shows (”Battlestar Galactica 1980″) and some funny movies (”War Inc”, and “Cash Back”). The quality was quite good, DVD level and I experienced no lag.

Earlier today we went and saw a fabulously funny film, “Four Christmases”. We went to see it with Jeremy and Nichole. I had been a little apprehensive about it recently, as I was afraid that having seen numerous trailers for the movie that I had already seen all of the funny parts. Nope, not in the least. If you haven’t seen the movie and think that from any trailers you have seen that you might be interested in seeing it, please definitely go and see it

Tonight we watch “Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day” via the U-Verse video on-demand. It was one that Gina and I had wanted to see in the theatres but had missed out catching down at the Great Hills Regal (which tends to show more of the art-house style flicks).

We closed out the evening with “Sweet Home Alabama”, which we have on DVD. It is one of Gina’s favorites and I have to admit I like it too.

Well, it is definitely time for bed.

Birthday L00T!!!

October 15th, 2008

I took the photos a while ago, but haven’t really had a chance to put together a post.

(One of my gifts has been taking up a lot of my ‘free’ time.)

I’ll let you guys figure out which one.

fruit from my mother-in-law

Last year my mother-in-law, Brenda got me a cookie basket (mmmm… cookies). This year, to be a bit more healthy I got a fruit basket (with a balloon). The basket was mostly melon, which I will have to admit I am not a huge fan of. I have on occasion eaten a few pieces of musk melon, but not a fan. So I let Gina eat the melon, she LOVES it. I really enjoyed the grapes, strawberries, apples (dipped in cholocate) and the pineapple stars.

Thanks MOM(-in-law)!!!

Our good friend John Hale got me a 4th Gen Nano, in light of the fact that Steve Jobs stole my last one.

4thGen Nano

Thank You John!!!

This brings us to what the wife got me for my birthday.

The first thing I will mention is that she got me a Neti pot. Which I actually used, after weeks of it sitting in my bathroom, in the box. I NEEDED it when I was sick to help remove the pressure from the sinuses that were giving me a serious headache.

The next thing she got me was pretty much the only thing left on my list.

The Nerf N-Strike Vulcan EBF-25 gun. It is a fully automatic, belt fed NERF machine gun.

Nerf gun

Because of the fact that while shooting the dogs might be fun (namely the evil little black and white one), the fun would be short lived as the darts would probably mean costly trips to the emergency vet, the gun is staying at the office.

The gun is a bit louder than I originally was expecting. I didn’t think it would be silent, but not quite as loud as it is. However, the speed at which it can burn through the full 25 dart belt is quite impressive. But the noise makes it like a after 5pm toy. (unlike the revolvers which are more of a ‘not on the phone right now’ kind of toy)

I also bought myself a couple of gifts, Civilization Revolution (for the Xbox360 and the Nintendo DS-Lite).

Only one nuke in Civ Revolution

The folks at Firaxis did a great job of optomizing the play control of the game for both the Xbox360 and DS-Lite. As a long time Civ player, I really enjoy the fast paced action of the game. They made certain parts of the game simpler, in a good way. Except one.

They only give you one Nuke. For whatever reason, as Jeremy can (and does) comment on, I seem to like games with Nukes. In part, because I actually use them. In Rise of Nations, I can be found to use them to help level the playing field. In Civ3 and Civ4, there were a few times I found myself at a relative stalemate (cold war if you will) and had enough cities with high production, to be able to build enough of a nuke stockpile to be able to hit every city of my computer opponent, in a single turn.

The one thing I will say about the nuke in CivRevolution, is that rather than simply eliminate the enemy units (and reduce the population of a city) as it does in the other Civ games, the Nuke in CivRevolution completely removes the city in question off the map, nothing but a smoking crater.

Well, I need to pack it in and get to bed.

Traverse City’s New Tourist Slogan

July 10th, 2008

“See the bay and buy a Wii!”

So last year Gina and I saw that the Traverse City Meijer’s had several Nintendo Wii video game systems. We didn’t buy one when we saw it, stating that we were planning to be back in Traverse City the next day and if they still had some we would buy one then, because then it would be kismet.

However, we did not make it to Traverse City the next day, and therefore did not purchase the Nintendo Wii at that time.

This past Monday, we went to the Traverse City Meijer’s with the intent of purchasing groceries for the bbq tomorrow and some other foodstuffs. Before we set out on the trip north Gina and I had stated that we would need to check to see if that Meijer’s in Traverse City had a Nintendo Wii available, as there have been NONE available in Austin. (They sell like hot cakes, or are secretly diverted off to eBay.)

Well, they did have a Nintendo Wii available, two of them in fact. We purchased one, it is still in the box. Since they were having a sale we also purchased a second Wii-mote, that came with the latest Wii-Sports game disc.

I asked the clerk if they get regular shipments of them (Wii systems) delivered. She told me that they get a delivery about every 3-4 weeks, and that they usually get 20 units. However, this last time they got 50 units.

From what I have been able to get out of some (ToysRUs, GameStop, etc) clerks down in Austin, they get a shipment every 1-2 months and only a handful of units (5-10). So 20 units being shipped to a Meijer’s in a town that is a decent size, but known for being a resort town seems to be a little off.

But as I tried to say with a straight face to Gina, “It is a by-product of attempting to have an equal distribution of product across a chain of stores without taking into account the the regional demographics.”

I said that mouthful before I found out that the latest shipment had 50 units, of which they had already sold 48, err 49 with our purchase. So regardless of Traverse City’s reputation for being a resort town, that Meijer’s can sell some video game systems. The clerk informed us that one lady purchased three systems. Leaving the store and returning each time, therefore fulfilling the “limit one per purchase/visit” policy.

So I definitely think that given the trouble the tourism industry is having in northern Michigan, that Traverse City should do a promotional campaign and promote the fact that the Traverse City Meijer’s has Nintendo Wii’s available (fairly regularly) as a way to bring in more visitors to the city to have them see the Grand Traverse Bay.

Ok, time to shutdown and go to bed.
